About Us
History:
CLIR was founded in 1973 by the University of California. UC Berkeley Extension provided CLIR a home, access to a full slate of Extension classes and some direct funding for many years. CLIR was the first educational experience of its kind in the western United States.
In 2005 CLIR incorporated and became a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. In June 2009, CLIR relocated its office to 50 First St., Suite 300, San Francisco, where there is more space. Although UC Berkeley Extension no longer provides financial support for CLIR, we are still able to offer a 10% discount on classes offered in their catalog.
CLIR offers more than access to a classroom. CLIR’s social component is as rich and varied as its learning opportunities. From dining out, to monthly social hours with delicious hors d’oeuvres, wine, and desserts; chartered bus trips; and Spanish & French conversation groups; it’s what sets CLIR apart from other learning in retirement programs. CLIR has members from six Bay Area counties.
Administration:
The CLIR learning community of nearly 200 members is governed by an elected council. All members are encouraged to participate in one or more of the committees that provide the core of CLIR’s activities:
» CLIRsights (engages a monthly speaker)
» Membership (manages member enrollment)
» CLIRVoice (writes & edits newsletter)
» Office Services (helps with office projects)
» Curriculum (plans peer led classes and activities)
» Marketing (plans & executes CLIR’s marketing plan)
» Hospitality (plans & executes monthly social hour)
CLIR is easily accessible by public transit:
