The Oakland Day Tour was a pleasant, educational day for one and all. More photos may be seen by clicking this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sonnie_defined/sets/72157624382029589/with/4797165641/

Thanks to the CLIR Tours Committee. It was great to see the newly reopened Oakland Museum of California with an excellent docent. And we were divided into groups of seven which made it so much better.
The Cameron-Stanford House on Lake Merritt was an added treat as it is so handsomely furnished in its overdone Victorian decor.
This tour is an example of what makes CLIR wonderful!

Dick Hewetson led us on a wonderful walking tour to see beautiful Victorian homes in the Mission District yesterday. Along the way a couple of home owners invited us onto their property to see their back gardens. One couple invited us into their carriage house where they have a terrific game room including pinball machine, juke box and pool table. Such serendipitous happenings are the lore of CLIR and it’s why I continue to appreciate this wonderful organization.

Our walk today in the Mission District was very well planned and executed by Dick Hewetson. I saw many marvelous examples of architecture exemplified by houses remaining from the 19th century. In addition to the planned walk we were invited into homes and gardens of residents whom we met accidently. What a great day!! As a member of Walks Committee, I am sorry for any CLIR member who wasn’t present to enjoy the day with us.

CLIR -Special Audiences :Tokyo String Quartet May 8
We had wonderful first-floor seats for this delightful concert. I’d long wanted to hear these world-famous artists in-person and to think I was offered the opportunity for convenient, free ticket certainly added to my pleasure. Once again CLIR -Special Audiences proved its great value!

CLIR -Art-on-the-Go May 20 AUTODESK GALLERY
More than 30 joined Fran Hasher on our group’s docent-lead. While some of us knew of the high-end software applications company AUTODESK we all were stunned to see, and feel, the product, architecture, engineering and art being produced world-wide “using computers.” The chatter, as we left, included how amazing Fran’s varied findings for Art-on-the-Go are month in & out. Cheers to Fran, and much thanks for CLIR’s good fortune.

CLIR -Dine & Discuss May 13
24 of us joined Karla at the Tonga Room for a delightful meet&eat. Many of us had thought about sampling this San Francisco icon but somehow hadn’t ventured in jumped at the chance to share the experience with fellow CLIR members. Much thanks Karla for finding such a great venue for our monthly gathering!

I’m in my 7th year as a CLIR member and it is central to my life. I attend peer-taught classes two or three times each week & thoroughly enjoy them. I also hold a membership in the optional Special Audiences program which gets me free tickets to music & theater productions as well as lectures. But perhaps the thing I enjoy, and look forward to most, is CLIR’s monthly general meeting where I learn about what’s happening the following month, and the social hour that follows, where we have great food & wine. I do have one suggestion: that the Current Affairs group promote itself actively & that they launch a campaign to attract a broader range of political views. Our weekly discussions are lively & interesting and could be even more so with a few more Republicans in the mix.

CLIR offers to me an unusual broad & balanced program, covering many things that I have been curious about. allowing me to stumble on the answers with no effort, in the most enjoyable way, with the best of company! Lecturers that really talk to me, making a remote topic absolutely fascinating, then motivating me to see plays, concerts, unique art galleries, movies & dine outs in the delightful copy of other members. Best of all I enjoy sharing our perception of the news today. Somehow it is my selected extended family… I kinda care about everyone! Once you try it, then you will understand!

CLIR has met my expectations by providing many diverse activities and events to attend. I actually enjoy going to meetings and serving on the Council. I would like to see more Republicans and less Democrats in Current Affairs! I would like to have bridge and exercise added to the Curriculum.
